The 4th Southern African Regional Students and Youth Conference (SARSYC IV) was convened by SAYWHAT in partnership with LUANAR and GAYO from 24 to 26 August 2022 in Lilongwe, Malawi. Held under the theme “Reshaping, Re-planning and Re-Committing to the Youth Agenda in the Southern African Region,” the conference brought together over 300 delegates from the 16 SADC member states, including young people, civil society organisations, researchers, academics, government representatives, and development partners.

The conference provided a regional platform to reflect on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on young people's health, education, livelihoods, and overall wellbeing. Discussions focused on renewing commitment to key regional and global frameworks, including the SADC SRHR Strategy, the Regional Strategy for HIV and AIDS Prevention, the SADC Protocol on Education and Training, the ESA Commitment, Agenda 2030, Agenda 2063, and the Maputo Plan of Action. Participants examined the challenges that had undermined progress in advancing youth development, particularly the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, shrinking resources, mental health concerns, non-communicable diseases, and barriers to health and education services. The conference emphasized the need to re-engage young people on development issues and ensure sustained participation in shaping policies and programmes that affect their lives. Through dialogue among young people, governments, development partners, and international agencies, SARSYC IV promoted the co-creation of practical solutions, strategies, and renewed commitments aimed at improving health rights, strengthening education systems, and advancing inclusive development for young people across Southern Africa.
